How to Download and Restore the Contoso Demo Data for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012
Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution that helps businesses manage their operations, finances, supply chain, human resources, and more. One of the ways to learn about the features and capabilities of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 is to use the Contoso demo data, which is a set of sample data that represents a fictional company called Contoso Entertainment Systems. The Contoso demo data includes various business scenarios, such as retail, manufacturing, distribution, and service industries.
In this article, we will show you how to download and restore the Contoso demo data for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. We will assume that you have already installed Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 on your system, and that you have access to a SQL Server database where you can restore the demo data.
Step 1: Download the Contoso demo data
The Contoso demo data is available as a SQL .bak file that you can download from the Microsoft Learn website. Depending on the version of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 that you are using, you can choose one of the following links:
For Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 RTM (build 6.0.947.0), click [here].
For Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 (build 6.2.1000.156), click [here].
For Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 (build 6.3.1000.309), click [here].
The file size is about 282 MB, so it may take some time to download depending on your internet connection speed. Save the file to a location that you can easily access later.
Step 2: Restore the Contoso demo data
After you have downloaded the Contoso demo data file, you need to restore it to a SQL Server database that is compatible with your version of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. For example, if you are using Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, you need to use SQL Server 2014 or later.
To restore the Contoso demo data, follow these steps:
Open SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the SQL Server instance where you want to restore the demo data.
In Object Explorer, right-click on Databases and select Restore Database.
In the Restore Database dialog box, select Device as the source and click on the browse button (...) next to it.
In the Select backup devices dialog box, click on Add and locate the Contoso demo data file that you downloaded in step 1. Click OK.
In the Restore Database dialog box, enter a name for the destination database, such as ContosoDemoData. Make sure that the Restore option is checked for the backup set.
Click on Options in the left pane and check the Overwrite the existing database option. You can also change the location of the data and log files if needed.
Click OK to start the restore process. This may take several minutes depending on your system performance.
When the restore process is completed, you should see a message saying that the database was restored successfully.
Step 3: Configure Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 to use the Contoso demo data
The final step is to configure Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 to use the Contoso demo data that you restored in step 2. To do this, follow these steps:
Open Microsoft Dynamics AX Configuration Utility from Start > All Programs > Microsoft Dynamics AX > Configuration Utility.
Select an existing configuration or create a new one by clicking on Manage > Create configuration.
In the Configuration Target drop-down list, select Business Connector (non-interactive use only).
In the Connection tab, enter or select the name of the SQL Server instance where you restored the Contoso demo data in step 2.
In the Database drop-down list, select ContosoDemoData or whatever name you gave to the destination database in step 2.
Click on Apply to save the changes.
